The best wellness apps in 2026, honestly compared
“Wellness app” is a label that hides more than it explains. Calm, Headspace, Oura, Whoop and Rise sit in the same App Store category while doing almost nothing in common. Here is what each one actually does, what it scores, and how much it asks of your data - so you can pick by job, not by buzzword.
Why “wellness app” is a useless label
The word covers a meditation timer, a sleep-debt calculator and a $300 ring with equal confidence. That is not a category, it is a marketing bucket. When you search for the “best wellness app” you get a list of tools that cannot be compared, because they are not solving the same problem. The useful question is never “which is best” - it is “which job am I actually trying to do.”
The four real jobs
Strip the branding away and almost every “wellness” app is doing one of four things:
- Calm the mind. Meditation, breathing, guided wind-downs. Calm and Headspace own this.
- Track the body. HRV, resting heart rate, recovery. This is wearable territory - Oura and Whoop.
- Fix sleep. Timing, debt and energy schedules. Rise lives here.
- Protect attention. Defending unbroken focus from the phone itself. Almost nobody scores this - which is where Soren comes in.

A fair word on each
Calm is the polished default for getting to sleep and lowering the volume on a busy head. Sleep stories, breathing, soundscapes. It does not measure you, it soothes you, and it is very good at that.
Headspace is the more structured teacher: courses that build a meditation habit step by step. If you want to actually learn the practice rather than press play, it is the stronger pick.
Oura puts the best sleep read in the category into a ring you forget you are wearing, then folds it into a daily Readiness score. You buy the ring and pay a membership for the analysis.
Whoop is the screenless band for people who train with intent: Strain and Recovery, subscription only. Outside serious training, much of its depth goes unused.
Rise ignores meditation entirely and models your sleep debt and circadian energy, telling you when to wind down and when your peak hours fall. A specialist, and clear about it.
Where Soren fits
Soren is the only one of these aimed at the fourth job - protecting your attention - and the only one that turns it into a number. That is the trade. The wearables read your body more deeply than a phone ever could, and the meditation apps will calm you in a way a score never will. One honest caveat: Soren is iOS 17+, on the App Store, while these are mature products that have shipped for years. The Soren Score is a reflection and an estimate - its sleep stages are modelled, not clinical - so read it as a mirror, never a diagnosis.
